Behind closed doors, lurking, hiding in the darkness (cue ominous thunder)THE CLOSET!
Our favorite place to toss things, hide things, pile things and forget about things. We
become masters of density in our little clothing cubbies. Here are some basic steps which
will help you tackle your clothing closets:

  • Only tackle one closet at a time--it will likely take longer than expected. Working on
one closet at a time insures that you will more likely complete the job and you'll be
more inspired to do the next closet.

  • Take out all the clothing. AS YOU TAKE IT OUT, have trash bags or boxes or laundry
baskets ready for 4 piles: DONATE, REPAIR, CLEAN, and KEEP. If you are
swapping out seasonal items, you may want to add a pile for that designation. As
each garment is taken out, put it in the designated pile. Be honest with yourself
about each garment. Check its condition, fit, whether it's still in style and whether or
not you even like it anymore. Any of those reasons is a good reason to let it pass
on. Use the same process with purses, shoes, belts, hats.

  • Bag your donation items and put them in the car to go to the donation center.
Deliver your dry cleaning and put your items to be repaired in your sewing room or
take them to your alterations service.

  • Before putting items back in the closet, vacuum, dust and wipe down the shelves
and racks. You may wish to even use a sachet or cedar blocks in the closet to
freshen it up a bit before returning the clothes.

  • As items go back in the closet, sort as you go. Group your pants, blouses and suits
together on appropriate hangers. Shoes, folded garments can be shelved, hats
    hung, etc.

  • If you like, you can "test" yourself by putting your hung garmets back in your closet
with the hanger facing the opposite direction on the bar (facing toward the closet
door). Each time you wear a garment, turn the hanger back to it's normal position.
After several weeks, you will begin to see which garments you are truly wearing and
which garments never see the light of day. It's a good way to get a "read" on what
you really do like and wear the most. By the end of a season, you may be ready to
take another load to a donation center!

These steps will give you a good start on clearing out your closets all through your house.
