It's going to be tax time soon enough, so let's get cracking on the papers and files.

  • Assign a specific "receptacle" or file or drawer for collecting all tax-related
    receipts, documents and forms that have already started showing up in the mail.

  • Shred outdated documents.  (Click here for list of how long to keep documents.)

  • Recycle unused magazines and catalogs.

  • Go through each drawer of file cabinets and look for unused files from the past
    year.  Determine whether or not these untouched files and documents are
    "lifetime" documents.  If not, discard.

  • Select only favorite cards, letters, photos from the past year.

This will give you a good start on clearing out unnecessary papers and make space for
the coming year.  There are several other steps that can be taken to establish a system
