The holiday countdown has begun, and chances are you or someone you know will be traveling during these festive two months.
- One of the biggest hurdles in travel is making the distinction between
what you WANT and what you absolutely NEED. Remember there is probably a Walgreen's or a Wal-Mart nearby. If you forgot your toothbrush, you don't have to go without.
- When planning your travel wardrobe, stick to two coordinating colors and
use layering. Two or three turtlenecks, a vest, a pullover, a cute hoodie and a warm sweater will give you many outfits when mixed with a couple pairs of pants.
- Use travel-size products for hair and skin care. You rarely need a full-sized
bottle of shampoo or lotion for a holiday trip. Check on flight resrictions for bottle sizes in carry-ons. And always put your toiletries in a plastic zip-style bag to prevent spillage from leaking into your suitcase.
- If you're traveling with children, each child gets a backpack to house his
personal items. Toys, books, and travel-appropriate entertainment will travel beautifully in a backpack. This naturally limits how many items the child brings along and becomes a mobile "closet" in which they have to put away their things.
- Before the trip, keep a running list of things you don’t want to forget. Begin
gathering trip items in a laundry basket as your departure date draws near. They are much less likely to be forgotten when they are in plain sight.
- Arriving at your destination with a hostess gift creates a personal touch.
Collect travel items and goodies on clearance and arrange them in a decorative basket with a handle. Add a festive ribbon and you have a hostess gift “to go.”
- When traveling with gifts, leave off the bows. Instead, place the bows in a
food storage container and pack them in your luggage. You can add the bows when you arrive at your destination.
- Plan your time! Add “time buffers” to every portion of the trip. There are
always interesting delays, detours and stops that were never part of the original plan. Build in time to give you breathing room when those delays do occur.
